There are some people who are raring to go to the gym no matter what time of the day. They don’t need an external source of motivation to do a workout. Exercising itself is the drive they need. Then there are people who know they need to go to the gym, even want to go to the gym but put it off. They require an outward force to get them going.
After reading the paragraph, we’re pretty sure most people would be nodding a yes to the second category. All of us have had days when changing into workout clothes and then getting to the workout class seems like an insurmountable task. You’d rather stay on the sofa and watch something on Netflix.
If that is the case with you, here are some practical and smart motivation tips for exercise. Each one of them will get you on your feet and ready to bring that body back into shape.
How To Motivate Yourself To Exercise More?
- Keep in my mind what got you started.
When you can’t be bothered to exercise, remember why you started in the first place. Was it because you didn’t feel good in a pair of shorts? Was it because you failed to fit in a pair of jeans you purchased a few years? Or was it because a dress didn’t look nice on you due to the extra pounds.
Think over those times, and you’ll be driven to the gym. Keep in mind that if you don’t work out now then, you’ll have to restart all over again.
- Change into exercise attire.
When you are not in the mood to go running or swimming or cycling, simply go and change in your exercise clothes. Once you have the workout attire on, you’ll automatically want to start exercising because it becomes a waste of effort to wear the clothes but still not do anything.
- Keep hair wash days the days you work out.
If it’s been a long time since you’ve worked out, stop washing your hair. You get to shampoo only on the days you exercise. When they are dirty, limp and lanky, you’ll be motivated to pump iron.
- Put up motivational posters.
This is the oldest trick in the book. You hang up photos, posters, quotes and anything else that motivates you to go training. An image of a model, a good saying or even a goal weight works well. Use the car mirrors, the wall, the refrigerator to hang them and they become constant reminders for you.
Things That Push You Towards Exercising
- Will you regret it?
A simple question – will you regret skipping the gym class – can become the biggest motivator to get you moving. It happens because the answer is usually yes.
- Take a group class.
When you see other people more energetic than you and more motivated to drill, it pumps you up. Add to it the massive energy of the class and group fitness sessions are the best way to get you out of bed and into workout clothes.
There is a sense of accountability that pushes you further and keeps you from calling it quits. Rather you end up working out more than you would alone.
- Look towards your kids.
If you have little ones, you already know it takes a lot of stamina to keep up with them. When you are not in the mood to do HIIT or aerobics, look towards your kids. If you slag off exercise, your stamina will lessen, and you’ll not have the energy to participate in all your kids’ activities.
- Do it for the ‘Gram.
If you are millennial or a Gen Z, then look at working out as the time to take Instagram worthy pictures. It could be of the gym, it could be of you, or it could be off the gorgeous park where you go running. Let those pictures you get to post on social media become your motivating factor.
- Find a friend.
Instead of a gym class, think of it as the time you get to meet friends. Hanging out with friends is much more likely to get you off the couch and into the car. And remember the biggest hurdle is stepping out of the home. Once you reach the workout class, you’ll be drawn to jump into it.
- Books are the way to go.
While there is nothing wrong with a great workout playlist to get you jazzed for a workout, a better idea is to listen to audiobooks. As you exercise, listen to a story. If you skip a class, you don’t get to listen to the audiobook. So, the story keeps you going because you want to know what happens next in the book!
Tricks To Improve Exercise Motivation
- Try exotic fitness techniques.
Instead of joining the same old gym, find out unique or boutique fitness studios near you like aerial silk, soul cycle or even Zumba. Yes, they are more expensive, but the novelty of it will get you to the class. It doesn’t feel like a 45 to a 60-minute session that helps you lose weight. It feels like learning a new skill, which is more than sufficient to get you pumped. Moreover, because you are spending more, you are more motivated to go to the sessions.
- Jot down your feelings and progress.
After every class, write down how you felt and how much weight you’ve lost or inches dropped. When motivation to exercise runs low, read through them. Because training leaves you feeling fabulous, those thoughts will push you to workout.
And finally, if for nothing else then workout to eat better. The more you burn calories, the more awesome food you can binge on without the worry of putting on extra weight!
